I got this to capture barcode serial numbers from equipment. Comes with a program book to set it up for other uses, but I just attacked it via the USB to my Vista OS laptop and Vista saw it loaded drivers, very quickly, and I began scanning serial numbers into an excel spreadsheet. It took longer to unpack the scanner than it did to connect and start to use it. It has scanned in serial #'s without fail or mistake and from 10 or 12 inches away; it does need to be closer for those tiny barcodes that are less than 1/4" high. Great scanner, wish I had thought to get one sooner could have saved me a lot work. No more writing #'s down by hand then typing them into a spreadsheet. Great price too, looked at others for more $$$ and this has the same sturdy feel as the $$$ ones. I would buy it again!
